How Plumbing Changed the World

When thinking about innovations, inventions and discoveries that have completely revolutionised the way that we live our lives, it goes without saying that plumbing is something that made an incomparable positive impact around the world. There aren’t many things that you can truly say changed the world on a global scale, but plumbing, even in its simplest forms, is definitely one such thing.

Here at Wilmot Plumbing we take pride in being able to improve the quality of people’s homes and lives with our professional tradesmanship skills. We really have come a long way! From some humble plumbers in Newcastle, here are a few of the ways in which plumbing has changed the world.

  • Let’s start with the obvious, the flush toilet! It’s hard to put into perspective just how important this invention was. The innovation in the way people disposed of their waste had a dramatic and instant effect on hygiene levels, doing wonders for the levels of bacteria not only in homes but also out in the streets via open sewers.

  • Did you know that the first sewer line wasn’t installed until 1728? Thank god it happened eventually, because again in a more or less instant fashion, streets became cleaner and less dangerous, and cities overall became much cleaner and more civilised.

  • Indoor plumbing really did change the world in the sense that most people no longer had to rely on the use of public water pumps. The comfort of being able to turn on a tap and have clean, hygienic water come out for your own use is something that revolutionised home living.

  • It was a real game changer when water heaters became a mainstream feature in homes. Gone were the days of having to heat small batches at a time; now that hot water on demand was a thing, people were free to do incredible things like draw hot baths in no time at all!
